Do you think the U.S. would function better as a Republic, wherein every citizen over 18 votes on every issue?

The system I'm envisioning still has elected officials, but they would essentially debate and create laws and proposals which the entire eligible voting populace would vote on, making the phrase "of the people, by the people, for the people" truly mean something again.
